Friedrich Einhoff, born in Magdeburg in 1936, studied with Alfred Mahlau and Willem Grimm at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1957 to 1962, and subsequently at the Universität Philosophie und Literatur. From 1978 to 1991 Friedrich Einhoff taught as a professor at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Hamburg. In 1985 Einhoff was appointed as a member of the Freie Akademie der Künste in Hamburg. An accomplished draftsman, Friedrich Einhoff could not escape his obsession with the figure, nor could the figure escape the draftsman. Animated and dynamic in early works, either solitary or in groups, and later rather statuesque and with more abstracted extremities, the human figure plays a major role in his formal repertoire. Einhofff’s process of artistic creation is permeated by his search for an efficacious method of drawing to express the ambivalent and fragile nature of human existence. The figure is not simply depicted in a photorealistic manner; instead he invents the figure and places it in its own world, a pictorial world. In this semiotic model the subjectivity of the symbol with its existential connections becomes tangible. Friedrich Einhoff has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Germany and abroad.
