The artist presented, Marc Lüders, combines two media – photography and painting – drawing them into a dialogue on the planes of both reality and illusion. He integrates the painterly technique (paintbrush and oil) directly into photographs he himself has created in order to generate an experimental fusion. Once the divergence of the levels of presentation has have been discerned, there is a shift in the assessment of the image.

Lüders introduced the synthesizing term “photopictures” to describe this artistic technique. The artist intentionally positions himself in a complex, aesthetic and art-theoretical context and in this way continues the discourse on media reflection.

In his catalogue contribution “Between the images,” Stephan Berg highlights and analyses Marc Lüders’ artistic position within this perceptional-theoretical discourse between the media photography and painting. Luminita Sabau deals explicitly with the surreal connotations and the aspect of the unconscious in Lüders’ work in her essay “Marc Lüders and New Surrealism.” Both texts open up new perspectives and avenues of thought for Lüders’ œuvre and allow for a well-founded examination of his visual universes.
