LEVY & ALEXANDER LEVY RELOCATE TO BERLIN-MOABIT

Location: Alt-Moabit 110, D-10559 Berlin

Opening: Friday April 29, 6 – 9 pm

After more than 50 years in Hamburg and temporary branches in Paris and Madrid, LEVY gallery will now also have a space in Berlin again. Just in time for Gallery Weekend 2022, LEVY relocates to new premises in the Moabit district together with alexander levy gallery–the latter being situated in Kreuzberg for 10 years. At this new location a new common chapter begins.

For the opening LEVY will hit a group show including works by Meret Oppenheim, Man Ray, and Daniel Spoerri that sheds light on the close linkage between these three artists, owing to their aesthetic concepts as well as associative and sensual approaches to materials. Oppenheim gained initial notoriety in the 1930s as Man Ray’s muse, but then evaded the appropriation of the Parisian Surrealist circle, later meeting the younger Spoerri in Bern’s 1960s art scene. Spoerri, the later co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme, was still a dancer at the time, and Oppenheim paved his way to art. Thomas Levy has had a special relationship with all three artists. He collaborated with Oppenheim from 1978 until her death in 1985 and has worked with Spoerri since 2000. The connection to Man Ray goes back even further: in 1969, Thomas Levy, then 20 years old, met the 79-year-old artist in Paris. An encounter that significantly influenced his decision to open his gallery in the following year.
